Dan Carter looks set to return to the All Blacks' No.10 shirt later this month after he was named in the 28-man squad for the remaining Rugby Championship clashes with Argentina and South Africa.

The All Blacks' playmaker missed the recent victories over the Pumas and the Springboks with a calf injury but is on course to be fit for his side's date with Argentina in Buenos Aires on September 29.

"Dan is recovering well from his calf injury and we are expecting him to be fit for selection for the Argentinian Test," All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen said in a statement. "However, to be on the safe side we are also taking Beauden Barrett as cover at five-eighth, alongside Aaron Cruden."

Aaron Cruden has taken the All Blacks' reins in Carter's absence with Beauden Barrett providing cover on the bench with all three options included in the latest squad selection. As a result, a prop has been sacrificed with Wyatt Crockett missing out with Charlie Faumuina, Ben and Owen Franks, and Tony Woodcock named.

New Zealand are currently in control of the battle for southern hemisphere glory having won all four of their matches to date. A victory over the Pumas at the Estadio De La a week on Saturday will be enough to secure the title.

The All Blacks close out their tournament against the Springboks in Johannesburg on October 6.
