New Zealand will be without Luke Romano for next month's Test series against England after the second row broke his ankle in Super Rugby action for the Crusaders.

Romano was injured during the Crusaders' 57-29 thrashing of the Queensland Reds on Sunday, leaving Suncorp Stadium with his leg in a cast. No timeframe has been given for his return.

''It's a real blow for Luke," said Crusaders head coach Todd Blackadder. "He's had one of those mixed seasons. He started slowly and then had a calf injury. And now he's had an opportunity he's broke an ankle. He's pretty resilient and he'll come back from this.''

Romano's injury leaves the All Blacks with the likes of the Chiefs' Brodie Retallick and Romano's Crusaders team-mates Sam Whitelock and Dominic Bird for the second row berths in the three-Test series against England. The first Test gets under way on June 7 at Eden Park in Auckland.
