Chiefs captain Liam Messam has escaped sanction despite being found guilty of contravening a Super Rugby law against the Sharks in Durban.

Messam was cited for a choke hold-style tackle on Sharks flanker Renaldo Bothma during the Chiefs' 12-11 loss on Saturday. The original charge was for dangerous tackling but Messam admitted to a lesser charge of acts contrary to good sportsmanship.

Judicial hearing chairman Jannie Lubbe said the offence was at the lower end and because of Messam's clean disciplinary record no sanction was put in place. Messam is free free to play against the Cheetahs in Hamilton on Saturday.

The judiciary was kept busy in the wake of a spiteful encounter. Chiefs hooker Hika Elliot was suspended for one week and Sharks counterpart Bismarck du Plessis for four weeks after both were sent off for foul play. Sharks second five-eighth Francois Steyn was also sent off but was cleared of a dangerous throw charge and his red card was rescinded.
