Ulster flanker Stephen Ferris is set to be ruled out of Ireland's summer tour to New Zealand and Australia after suffering a fractured cheekbone.

Ferris picked up the injury during a training session ahead of his side's Magners League clash against Connacht and following an X-ray it was decided that he requires surgery that will rule him out of action for six to eight weeks.

Declan Kidney's side are due to play the Barbarians at Thomond Park (June 4) before heading Down Under for two mouth-watering Test matches against New Zealand in New Plymouth (June 12) and Australia in Brisbane (June 26). Ireland's tour will also include a match against New Zealand Maori in Rotorua (June 18) as part of the Maori's centenary series.

The news is the latest injury blow for Ferris who was ruled out of last year's British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa by a knee injury and he was also sidelined for the Six Nations opener with Italy with another knee injury.

Ulster utility back Paddy Wallace will also miss the game and is another facing a fitness race for Ireland's summer tour. Wallace injured his thigh against the Ospreys last month and has not played since and, despite daily physio, is still having problems with a flexor muscle.

Ulster finish their domestic campaign against provincial rivals Connacht at Ravenhill. Ferris scored Ulster's fifth try in their recent bonus point win over Edinburgh which confirmed their place in next season's Heineken Cup.
