Wales hooker Matthew Rees will captain the Scarlets in the forthcoming season. The British & Irish Lion has inherited the armband from wing Mark Jones, who has been forced to retire due to persistent knee injuries.

While Jones has taken up a role as attack coach at the region, Rees has been tasked with helping them recover their past form after a disappointing ninth-place showing in the Magners League last season.

Rees will be assisted by Wales fly-half Stephen Jones and former Wallabies No.8 David Lyons. Jones has been installed as vice-captain while Lyons will lead the side when Rees and Jones are absent on international duty.

"With experienced guys like Steve and David backing me, I think we'll have a lot of strength and focus in getting this squad to perform to the best of its ability," Rees said. "For me, it's about getting back to winning ways and I want to see Parc y Scarlets become a much tougher place to come and play.

"There is huge potential in this squad from senior level down through to our exciting new crop of development players. You can see that some of the guys who've had a taste of top level rugby now are eager to produce the results."
