Ireland winger Andrew Trimble has been ruled out of the Six Nations opener against Italy on February 5 with a broken right hand.

An X-ray on Monday revealed the Ulster back had broken a metacarpal in Saturday's 43-6 Heineken Cup victory over Aironi.

Trimble, 26, will definitely miss the clash with Italy on Saturday week with a date yet to be set for his return.

Stephen Ferris and Tommy Bowe underwent scans on knee problems today and an update on their progress is expected by the end of Tuesday.
