Student awarded £2.3m after rugby injury

A student in Ireland has received €2.75m (£2.31m) damages following a head injury he sustained while playing rugby in his schooldays.

Lucas Neville, now 22, suffered a head injury in training back in November, 2009. He went to hospital complaining of headaches and eye problems but the hospital informed him there was no need for a scan of his head.

He had sustained a subdural haematoma which had gone undetected and after sustaining another bang to the head while playing a game of rugby 17 days later - a match which fell inside the parameters of the mandatory three-week lay-off for head injuries - he collapsed and was rushed into hospital.

Neville has been left with a permanent brain injury and sued his former school and the St Vincent's Healthcare Group in Dublin. He pushed for €5m worth of damages and while both defendants admitted liability they disputed the size of the claim.

His mother, Michelle Neville, has since said she was surprised they never received an apology from either the school or hospital. "What happened to him and what he went through should not have happened," she said. "An apology would be nice."
