Matt Scott admits his international lay-off has been so long that Sunday's clash with Wales will feel like he is making his Scotland debut all over again.

The Edinburgh back has not featured for the national side since their harrowing 51-3 defeat to Wales in last year's Six Nations.

Two shoulder operations have kept him out of action but ironically he could make his long-awaited return in this year's contest against Warren Gatland's side after being named on the bench for the Murrayfield meeting by new head coach Vern Cotter.

And the 21-cap Scot admits he is desperate to finally prove to the Kiwi what he can do.

"I've been trying to get myself physically right to play, but also mentally as well. It's been difficult," Scott said. "The guys have all been playing on this big international stage while I've been out and played fantastically.

"But I was just desperate to be involved. I played around nine games for Edinburgh but then got a little niggle in my shoulder at the wrong time and that ruled me out of the France game last week.

"That's been frustrating as I've not really had a chance to show Vern what I can do. But this week I've been able to train a lot and I'm just delighted to have been named in the squad. Hopefully I'll get a chance to prove myself.

"It's been almost a year since I've pulled on that Dark Blue jersey. It will almost feel like my debut again. I've not experienced that feeling of walking out in front of a packed out Murrayfield for so long so I reckon it will be a pretty special occasion."

Both Scotland and Wales will be looking to kick-start their respective campaigns.

Scotland impressed against France in their opener but could not find their first win in Paris for 16 years as they went down 15-8, while Wales lost 21-16 at home to England.

But for Scott, it is his chance to show that Alex Dunbar and Mark Bennett should not be guaranteed automatic picks in the Scotland midfield.

"It's testament to the strength and depth we have right now with Alex Dunbar and Mark Bennett playing really well," he said.

"Last year I was rushed back in after breaking my hand. I was out for about three months but was brought straight back into the national squad for the Six Nations.

"This year we've not had to do that and I've been allowed the time to get myself right. I enjoy the competition for places. It's a great thing. I'd rather have that than be guaranteed a place."
