Rugby Championship Preview: Australia v South Africa

Matt Giteau's four-year Test exile will come to an end against the Springboks on Saturday night after he was named at inside-centre in a new-look Wallabies line-up.

The 92-Test veteran has been given an opportunity to transfer his superb European form with Toulon into the Test arena alongside Quade Cooper, who has been given first crack at the No.10 jersey ahead of incumbent Bernard Foley. Cooper is joined in the halves by regular Reds partner Will Genia, the 27-year-old beating out Nick Phipps and Nic White for the No.9 jersey.

The rest of the backline takes on a familiar look with Israel Folau, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Rob Horne forming an experienced back three while Tevita Kuridrani offers power and pace from outside-centre.

"I could not have been happier with the first two weeks of preparation here in Queensland," Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said via a media release. "These players know they represent a squad of over 50 players who will have some involvement within the Wallabies program at different stages of the year."

"With new combinations comes a new level of energy to our team environment and Will, Quade and Matt certainly bring that. Matt is a true professional and his impact on the team dynamic has been immediate. His form in Toulon and work ethic since joining the squad has been first class."

Up front, Scott Higginbotham is back in favour at No.8 after a fine Super Rugby season for Melbourne Rebels while Michael Hooper has been selected ahead of David Pocock at No.7. Scott Fardy completes the back-row while Will Skelton teams up with Rob Simmons in the second-row.

Experience is the order in the front-row with James Slipper and Sekope Kepu holding off the challenges of Scott Sio and Greg Holmes to partner hooker and skipper Stephen Moore.

While he missed out on a starting spot to vice-captain Hooper, Pocock is in line to play his first Test since 2012 after a horror two years with injury. The Brumbies flanker has undergone two knee reconstructions since he last represented the Wallabies on the 2012 spring tour. The wait has been far longer for reserve prop Holmes however, the veteran Reds front-rower returning to the Test fold for the first time in eight years.
