Welsh clubs warned over future conduct

Derek McGrath, the chief executive of European Rugby Cup Ltd, has taken the unprecedented step of demanding that Welsh clubs improve their disciplinary records in this season's competition.

McGrath was speaking following a meeting with the clubs and his comments point to a number of high-profile incidents that have blighted the European game's image.

"We have a responsibility to make sure that the rules we put in place actually protect the players, the clubs, the spectators and the competition itself," McGrath said.

Pontypridd have twice been warned following matches with Brive and Colomiers - most notoriously after the away match in Colomiers, following prop Richard Nones' two-year ban for gouging.

"We've taken the opportunity to be very clear with the clubs that they have to set very high standards for themselves, and there has been broad agreement that this has got to be good for the game," McGrath said.

"We have been discussing how the needs of the Heineken Cup can blend in with disciplinary plans that already exist at club level."
