Stadium Ireland backing from IRFU
May 8, 2001

Building a new national stadium, it seems, is something that is not just beyond the English, now plans for a new stadium in Ireland have hit trouble.

Like with the new Wembley plans the cost of a new stadium, to replace the ageing Lansdowne Road, have spiralled out of control and politicians are starting to get a little hot under the collar.

The issue is becoming so serious that the balance of power in the Irish parliament is being threatened if the IRP£700 million project, funded in part by the government, is forced through.

The IRFU, however, have issued the following statement in support of Stadium Ireland:

"Irish rugby needs modern stadium facilities, there is no doubt. Lansdowne Road was developed and financed solely by Irish Rugby, but it no longer has the capacity or the standard of accommodation to meet the needs of international rugby.

"Over the last ten years, the IRFU purchased land for a stadium. However, the IRFU felt that the best way forward is stadium rental. For this reason, the IRFU supports the vision if Stadium Ireland and has committed to play all major internationals in the new facility.

"The provision of high performance facilities, sports medicines and sports science facilities in Sports Campus Ireland is a significant and genuine investment in Irish sporting excellence."
