Dallaglio's Lions place in the balance
May 12, 2001

Lawrence Dallaglio's chances of making this summer's trip to Australia still appear to be in the balance despite reports that a scan on his injured knee has revealed cruciate ligament damage.

Reports in the Daily Telegraph suggest that Dallaglio, who injured the knee in Wasps' Zurich Championship semi-final defeat against Bath, will undergo further tests this morning but it is feared he may be sidelined for several months.

However, talking on his own website, Dallaglio said, "You'll be pleased to know that I feel my knee is getting better and stronger day by day, although I am still some way from absolutely confirming my place on the Lions tour to Australia.

"I've had a second scan on my knee and I now need to see a doctor who can properly assess the damage. I'm hoping I can get an assessment on Monday and until then it's a case of wait and see. There's no reason to rule myself out of the tour yet although you've got be realistic."

Tour manager Donal Lenihan told AFP, "We would hope to hear something today, then discuss it at our management board meeting tomorrow, it would be wrong to enter into any speculation without knowing the full extent of the problem and I don't anticipate any announcement on our part until Monday at the earliest."

It was first thought that Dallaglio had only strained his knee and would be able to take his place with his fellow Lions when they meet up a fortnight before they depart for Australia on June 1.
