Connolly tips Lions if Wallabies are hit by injuries
May 16, 2001

John Connolly, a selector for the 1991 World Cup winning Australian side, predicted Tuesday that the Lions stood a chance in their forthcoming test series with Australia if the Wallabies suffered injuries to key players.

Connolly, former coach of Queensland and now coaching elite French side
Stade Francais, believes the Lions have more cover should they suffer injuries
than the Australians.

"I still rate the Australians as favourites and it is the right time of the season for them," he said.

"However, if George Gregan, Chris Latham or Stephen Larkham are injured
then they will be struggling because their backup is more limited than the
Lions cover," he added.

Connolly, who is preparing for Saturday's European Cup final with English champions Leicester, also believed that the scrums could cancel each other out.

"The Lions front five isn't the strongest ever but I don't think the
Wallabies front unit is as good as usual," he said.
