Stampede for 10,000 Test tickets
July 5, 2001

It took only 30 minutes for 10,000 extra tickets for the third and final rugby Test between Australia and the Lions to be snapped up.

And any fears that Lions fans would be blocked from getting tickets for the Sydney showdown a week Saturday proved unfounded.

The ARU had said it would try to block Lions fans after they had put Australian fans in the shade at the first Test in Brisbane where the Lions outplayed the Wallabies.

But ARU spokesman Strath Gordon said there was no attempt to check nationality at the box offices while people buying over the phone or through the internet had only to supply an Australian address.

Thousands of fans had queued overnight in Sydney to get the tickets when box offices opened Thursday morning.

"People phoning from overseas were on hold for up to half-an-hour. They didn't have a chance," a spokesman said.

The Australian Rugby Union released the extra tickets after temporary seating was added to bring the reconfigured Olympic stadium's capacity to 81,000.
