Wood: Pack must improve
July 9, 2001

Lions hooker Keith Wood has demanded his pack improve their game if they hope to win the series decider against Australia in Sydney.

"You can discount the first and second Test matches - it all comes down to this game on Saturday now," said Wood.

"We are here to try and do a job, and the series is not over by any means. For probably 50% of the players, this is their last Lions tour, and we are not going to lie down."

"We didn't scrum as well as we did the previous weekend, and we need to improve there," Wood conceded. "We also made some silly mistakes in the lineouts on occasions, and the forwards didn't function as an eight anywhere near as we could have done. We need to look at that a little bit more."

Wood though, believes that the Lions are still very much in contention, despite Australia gaining momentum from such a crushing victory. "I have always rated Australia - they play an all-encompassing game - but we are a very good side able to acquit itself well," he added.

"The guys might be a little sore, but the desire is there, and if we can win on Saturday, it will be a pretty significant achievement.

"You are itching to have an opportunity to play on such a large stage, and everyone is yearning to have a crack at it," he said, of the 80,000 sell-out Stadium Australia clash.
