Leinster edge out Llanelli
August 25, 2001

Leinster battled to a hard-fought 19-17 victory over Llanelli in a fast and highly combative affair at Stradey Park.

The Scarlets, who opened with a big win over Ebbw Vale found the Irishmen a much tougher option as the boot of fly-half Andy Dunne kept them on the back foot each time they threatened to pull away.

The home side had the early encouragement of a score within five minutes when Stephen Jones kicked a penalty goal, but the lead lasted just three minutes before Dunne was on target with a drop goal.

The fly-halves swapped another penalty each before the first try came on 17 minutes when Llanelli centre Leigh Davies finished off rousing work by his pack.

But by the break there was only two points in it after Dunne repeated his earlier dose.

A Jones dropped goal within two minutes of the re-start eased the home side's nerves, but Dunne insured relief was short lived with his third penalty success.

Jones widened the gap again with his third kick, but Leinster had plenty left and crowned a significant evening's work with a try which brought a thoroughly deserved victory.

And appropriately, Dunne was the man who set it up.

A quick change of pace inside his 22 had Llanelli suddenly going backwards, but there was nothing they could do to prevent speedy wing John McWeeney completing the sparkling move with a sprint over the final 40 yards for a try which the sure Dunne converted.
