Paris could host England-Ireland clash
September 11, 2001

A contingency plan to play in Paris has been drawn up to ensure England's Six Nations match with Ireland, postponed from last season because of the foot and mouth crisis, goes ahead.

The match has been rearranged for October 20 in Dublin and Rugby Football Union officials are confident that a change of attitude in Ireland about the problem will ensure the game takes place.

But Paris has been put on standby in case of further difficulties.

The RFU, currently paying compensation to clubs who suffered financially last season because they were affected by outbreaks of the disease, are heartened by the fact that no matches have had to be postponed during the first two weekends of the new season.

Terry Burwell, the RFU operations and community director, revealed: "We have paid considerable amounts to clubs to alleviate the difficulties of last year and claims are still being dealt with."
