Cardiff to stage Heineken finale
September 19, 2001

Cardiff's Millennium Stadium will stage the Heineken Cup final this season.

The stadium, venue for the 1999 World Cup final, will hold European club rugby's showpiece event on May 25 next year.

The announcement was made in Cardiff today by European Rugby Cup Limited chairman Jean-Pierre Lux.

"This is the first time the final venue has been announced at the start of the season," Lux said.

"This decision is a significant step forward for the tournament, and I am confident that the ERC board of directors has made the right choice.

"By naming the final venue at this point in the season, it allows ERC to work well in advance on it's promotion.

"The Millennium Stadium is a great venue, and one which I am sure will grace the seventh Heineken Cup final".

Cardiff has already staged two previous European finals - in 1996 and 1997 at the old Arms Park ground.

This season's 24-team tournament was launched in Cardiff today with three clubs making their tournament debuts - Newcastle, Bridgend and Italian outfit Calvisano.

Cup holders Leicester will begin the defence of their crown against Llanelli at Welford Road on Saturday week.
