England trio may lose £10,000
October 18, 2001

England's injured trio of Martin Johnson, Lawrence Dallaglio and Phil Vickery will miss out on £10,000 of a £50,000 Grand Slam bonus if Clive Woodward's men triumph in Dublin on Saturday.

To qualify for the full bonus a player must play in every game of this year's Six Nations Championship but due to the enforced postponment of the Ireland clash and the subsequent delay in wrapping up a possible Grand Slam all three players could miss out on a lucrative sum.

Under the current bonus deal the England trio will pocket £40,000 each if the Grand Slam is sewn up at Lansdowne Road.

The bonus was included in last season's player contracts that caused so many problems the England squad went on strike leading up to the autumn international with Argentina.

The £1.5m pay-out is covered by last season's one-off deal, which ended the strike and was thrashed out by Rugby Football Union chief executive Francis Baron and the players' negotiating team, which included Johnson, Dallaglio and Saturday's captain Matt Dawson.

It was agreed that as the Ireland game was part of last season's championship, any new deal with the RFU would not affect the special Slam bonus offer.

Following the peace deal between the Premiership clubs and the RFU, industrial action by the players to sort out future contractual disputes is no longer on the agenda.

The Evening Standard has revealedthe details of the new England international contracts. It will be worth a basic £70,000 with bonuses written into the deal to match the current Slam offer.

The players are now on the joint body representing the RFU and the clubs and their voices are finally being heard through the Professional Rugby Players' Association.

All 12 Zurich Premiership directors of rugby attended the season's first England squad session last month and took part in a discussion over the contract.
