Jenson Button thoroughly enjoyed his fight to second place at the Italian Grand Prix but acknowledged McLaren still needs to improve.

Button started third but a bad start dropped him as low as seventh in the early stages. However, he drove a strong race to pass team-mate Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso and eventually finish second.

"It was a really fun race, fighting with Lewis, with Michael and with Fernando," he said. "It wasn't for the lead, which was a shame, but it was always going to be difficult when we were down in seventh at one point and sixth after the start. It was a tough start to the race, but a lot of fun and the atmosphere here is fantastic, it's electric."

However, Button said McLaren needs to work harder to perfect its performance over practice, qualifying and the race.

"Another good race, but we've just got to get everything together on race weekends and hopefully we'll be challenging Red Bull and Seb [Vettel]," he added. "It was a great job by the whole team even if there are little things we need to work on."
