Scotland head coach Scott Johnson says that his squad have a long road ahead in shaking their issues, something that not even a win over Italy on Saturday will solve.

Scotland are yet to claim a win from their 2014 Six Nations campaign and travel to Rome this weekend on the back of a 20-0 thumping at the hands of England.

Saturday's meeting with the Azzurri has been dubbed the Wooden Spoon decider, with Jacques Brunel's team also losing their first two outings.

"There is no doubt, we would take a win. It would be good for the guys but it won't be the end of all our ills either. I keep talking about it, we want consistency in this team," Johnson said. "That's one of my issues with Scottish rugby. We seem to settle for these little peaks and then the troughs. Yes, a win would be great for morale, but let's not delude ourselves, we have to do it more often."

Former England coach Sir Clive Woodward termed this as the worst ever Scotland XV in the fallout of their Edinburgh defeat a fortnight ago.

However, Johnson believes that his current crop can take a result from their trip to the Stadio Olimpico.

"These guys are professional people. They take the plaudits when they come so they can take the flak now," he noted. "At the end of the day, they just need to get on with it. That's what we put ourselves out there to do."
