Parisse: Italy relegation talk ridiculous

CARDIFF -- Italy captain Sergio Parisse launched an impassioned defence of his side's standing in the Six Nations as he baulked at the idea of introducing promotion and relegation into the championship.

Wales' 67-14 victory over the Azzurri has done little to dampen calls for organisers to make the championship more inclusive, and open up a pathway from the second-tier European Nations Cup.

While Italy were conceding nine tries at the Millennium Stadium, Georgia -- the team most likely to benefit from any changes to the Six Nations' structure -- wrapped up their sixth successive Nations Cup title with a 38-9 defeat of Romania in Tbilisi.

By contrast, Italy have conceded 18 tries in their last two games and 29 in all as they finished with the Wooden Spoon for the second time in the last three years.

However, Parisse believes the Azzurri have done enough historically to justify their place among the elite.

"When you lose matches it's natural that people talk about relegation but I don't think it's the right way to have relegation in this tournament," Parisse said.

"Because if you can imagine next year, [if] you have a team like Ireland or Scotland in this position, do you think the organisers are going to accept this?"

Parisse added: "I really respect the other nations who play in the other Six Nations [European Nations Cup], Romania and Georgia have improved a lot but we're in this tournament because we've made some great results.

"We've beaten Ireland [in 2013], we've beaten France [in 2011 and 2013]. The other countries must have history like us."

However, Parisse insisted that if the Six Nations organising committee did take the decision to adopt promotion and relegation, then Italy would fulfil a potential playoff.

"Italy [got results] in the past, not for three or four years, for 10 or 15 years we've done historic results," he said. "Tell me another nation that deserves it more than us. I think it's ridiculous.

"But one day if anyone decides we need to do a relegation match with another nation we are going to accept it."
