Cardiff Blues have received a major boost ahead of their vital Heineken Cup tie with Gloucester on Sunday with the news that Wales No.8 Andy Powell has committed his future to the club.

Powell has signed a deal that will keep him with the Blues until 2012, and he is joined by prop Gary Powell, scrum-half Richie Rees and lock Bradley Davies in penning a new deal.

In an amazing season thus far for Powell he has broken into the Wales starting line-up and also been tipped by many as a potential Lions tourist. After several years of injury trouble and spells with Newport, Leicester, Beziers and the Scarlets, Powell has found form and will be a big asset to the Blues as they prepare for a move to their new stadium at the end of the season.

"Andy has been in outstanding form for us this season," said Blues boss Dai Young. "He has been unlucky over the last few years with injuries but having put a run of games together it is evident for everyone to see that he is a quality player with a real presence on the rugby pitch."

Prop Powell and scrum-half Rees have signed with the club until 2011, while promising lock Davies will stay at the Blues until the 2012 season. Davies won a call-up into Warren Gatland's Wales squad to tour South Africa, but was unfortunate to miss out with a knee injury sustained in training.

"Bradley has a big future with the Cardiff Blues, his physical presence on the pitch and his work rate around it cannot be underestimated," said Young. "He is another product of our Academy at Treforest and we are delighted that he has committed his future with us."
