Leicester Tigers have signed Jack Whetton until the end of the season, the 22-year-old son of former New Zealand captain Gary Whetton joining All Blacks legend Brad Thorn at the Aviva Premiership powerhouse.

Whetton played Super Rugby for the Brumbies this year before returning to Auckland to play in the ITM Cup.

"We are a little bit short of lock cover," Leicester director of rugby Richard Cockerill told the BBC as the Tigers confirmed club captain Ed Slater was out for the season while England and British & Irish Lions international Geoff Parling was working his way back from injury.

"Jack has signed until the end of the season. We have an option for longer and we'll see how he gets on."
