Broncos league star set to join Canterbury
August 28, 2000

Champion Broncos second-rower Brad Thorn is expected to play for Canterbury in the New Zealand NPC.

Thorn, who is in the middle of a premiership party with his successful Broncos team-mates after Sunday's 14-6 victory against the Sydney Roosters, has held a dream of one day playing for the All Blacks.

The New Zealand Rugby Football Union is yet to make an official announcement, but Otago Rugby Football Union chief executive John Hornbrook has conceded his club has lost out to Canterbury.

"We are out of it," Hornbrook said. "Brad Thorn's going the Canterbury way. His agent rang me a couple of days ago and said he has made a decision to go to Canterbury."

The Canterbury Rugby Football Union would not confirm Thorn's signature, but said he would be guaranteed a place with the side already boasting four current All Black loose forwards, plus of a host of young players impressing in this year's NPC. At 112kg and 1.95 metres, Thorn is seen as a possible lock, blindside flanker or No.8.
