Mains not in awe of WP

Lions coach Laurie Mains is not overly concerned about taking on Western Province at Newlands on Saturday in their Currie Cup semifinal.

Commenting on the manner in which WP tore them apart at Ellis Park a couple of weeks ago, Mains said: "I don't think it's a case of us having to improve dramatically on our earlier performance against WP.

"There are just certain aspects which we need to pay more attention to. Our defensive lines failed in the second half of that game and we'll also have to improve our ball control.

"But this semifinal is a one-off. What has gone before is totally irrelevant. But it's always a difficult mountain to climb down there."

While WP rely heavily on turnover ball to score tries, Mains said the defending Currie Cup champions are more adept at constructing their touchdowns.

Mains told a newspaper: "Province have their own set of special skills. All their inside backs are good at turnover possession and they have an excellent playmaker in Chris Rossouw.

"They play the game to create turnovers. We tend to construct more tries. If we had the kind of players they had, we would probably have played the same kind of game."

Province captain Corne Krige, speaking after their 46-26 win over Boland, said: "I'm disappointed that we twice let Boland back into the game. We also need to finish when we play ourselves into promising positions.

"We'll be up against a better team into the semifinals and will have to finish better as we won't get so mnay opportunities."
