Manawatu overcame the elements as well as the opposition in surprising Taranaki in their ITM Cup match at FMG Stadium in Palmerston North on Saturday The second-division Turbos led their Premiership opponents 6-3 when turning into the sweeping wind and rain for the second half, but they matched their more highly-ranked opponents and made plenty of the running in putting behind them their 72-7 thumping at the hands of Canterbury on Wednesday. The result sees the Turbos keep alive their hopes of making the Championship play-offs, while Taranaki remain second bottom in the Premiership and face the prospect of a relegation battle. Horrendous weather conditions in Palmerston North made for a forward-oriented contest with few try-scoring opportunities, and the points all came from the boot - with Turbos fly-half Jade Te Rure landing four penalties and centre Andre Taylor replying with two for the visitors. Michael Fitzgerald went close to scoring a try for Manawatu after 10 minutes, when driven over by fellow lock Fraser Stone, but he was unable to get the ball down. Taranaki No.8 Blade Thomson touched down from a lineout move late in the first half, but the throw-in was ruled not to have gone the distance.
