Tasman wrapped up their spot in the ITM Cup Championship final with a six-try victory over Southland in Blenheim on Saturday, the top-of-the-table Makos making the most of their chances in the first half as they proved lethal on the counterattack to punish the Stags' loose passing and sloppy handling with three first-half tries.

Tasman led 30-7 at half-time after tries from Tevita Koloamatangi, from a charge down, and Liam Squire and Mitchell Scott against one from Scott Eade, and they ran in three more tries in the second stanza to wrap up a home final next week.

Southland started the second spell strongly, as they tried to eat into their 23-point deficit, with tries to winger Bryan Milne and No.8 Elliot Dixon reducing the margin to nine points as the hour mark approached. But Tasman bounced back almost immediately, Robbie Malneek and Bryce Heem crossing in the space of four minutes to extend the lead to 42-21.

Will Murray picked up Southland's fourth try with seven minutes remaining, but Tasman's victory was never in doubt.

Hurricanes signing Marty Banks was in top form with his kicking game for Tasman, racking up 19 points with the boot and stealing a 72nd-minute try to cap off an outstanding effort.
