Hawke's Bay have again turned on the power late to win their second Ranfurly Shield defence of the season.

A depleted Magpies side outran Heartland Championship side Horowhenua-Kapiti 50-16 in Napier on Thursday, having led by just four points with 15 minutes to play. It was a similar script to the 58-7 win over Wairarapa-Bush a week earlier.

They face tougher opposition in Heartland Championship Meads Cup holders Mid Canterbury on Thursday. Mid Canterbury have had a mixed build up this year, beating Canterbury sub-union Ellesmere 22-20 but losing to Otago's Sassenachs 15-41.
