Ritchie: We all share a sense of deep disappointment

England assistant coach Andy Farrell stressed Stuart Lancaster has the final say on all selection calls and spoke out in defence of Sam Burgess as the fallout from their dismal Rugby World Cup campaign continues.

Farrell faced the press on Monday amid suggestions he had forced through certain selection calls during the World Cup but he shot down that notion. With question marks hovering over the future of the four England coaches -- Lancaster, Farrell, Mike Catt and Graham Rowntree -- Farrell launched a staunch defence of the head coach saying they "back him to the hilt". He also reiterated it is Lancaster who has the final say on all decisions.

"You might find it hard to believe but we agree on more things than we disagree with," Farrell said. "It's not even a disagreement because we are on the same page as one each other. We have discussions.

"I can't remember one incident where a coach would have been upset about something because we're all united together. It's Stuart's gig. We back him to the hilt."

He added it is Lancaster's "privilege" to overrule the other coaches on selection calls if he deemed it necessary. "He would bring that out [the decision to push through what he felt best] if that's what is needed. Ultimately we all work under his umbrella and that brilliant to work under. There are perimeters within that, but as coaches we are unbelievably happy with how he runs things."

Alongside those suggestions Farrell had railroaded certain selection calls were reports there was disharmony in the squad over the selection of Sam Burgess in the final 31-man party. Farrell denied Burgess had been a divisive influence and described his presence in the camp as "priceless".

"It's unfair all the comments coming out about him; obviously it's a big story now. He's put a tremendous amount of effort in, not just him showing what he's about. He's been selfless to the team in helping lead the boys and galvanising everyone together.

"He's been priceless as far as I'm concerned... but my overriding feeling for him is that he has given his all and we thank him for that."

After Saturday's match against Uruguay comes the RFU review into England's showing at the World Cup. Farrell said on Monday he hopes to continue in his role with England and spoke of the promise within the group ahead of future challenges.

"Stuart has put the graft in to lay that solid foundations. We'll obviously be defined by people for two losses, but it's more than that. If we stay on, or whoever comes in, it's a lot easier job now than it was three-and-half-years ago when he made those big decisions. His percentage of making big decisions has been outstanding over the last three-and-half years. That's why I say it's been built on rock solid foundations."
