Dan Carter has been nominated for the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year award, after playing a key role for New Zealand as the All Blacks became the first back-to-back Rugby World Cup champions.

Carter was nominated for his tournament-winning deeds at the Rugby World Cup, in which he was named Man of the Match in the final after scoring 19 points against Australia at Twickenham before taking up a contract with Paris-based Top 14 club Racing Metro.

Carter is among six nominations for the prestigious BBC award, lining up against Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, United States swimming sensation Katie Ledecky, world golf No.1 Jordan Spieth and world tennis No.1s Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams.

Bolt won three gold medals at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing; Djokovic enjoyed his most successful year to date winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open as well as reaching the French Open final; Ledecky won five gold medals and set two world records at the World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia; Spieth became just the fifth golfer in history to win the Masters and the US Open in the same season before finished tied fourth at The Open and runner-up to Australia's Jason Day at the US PGA Championship and winning the Tour Championship in Atlanta; and Serena Williams won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon to take to 21 her career grand slam singles tally.

Carter, who retired from international rugby after the Rugby World Cup final, is the all-time leading points scorer in Test rugby with 1598 points in 112 Tests. He was also recently named World Rugby World Player of the Year for the third time.
