Jason Woodward has been released from his Australian provincial rugby duties so he can play for Wellington Lions in the ITM Cup.

Woodward, who played for Wellington in 2011 and 2012 before his two-year Super Rugby stint with Melbourne Rebels, signed a two-year deal with the Hurricanes last month. The decision to release him from his National Rugby Championship duties in Australia frees him to play for 2013 ITM Cup Premiership runners-up Wellington when they open their 2014 campaign against Waikato on August 16.

Wellington-born Woodward was to have played for Melbourne Rising in the inaugural National Rugby Championship, and his availability for the ITM Cup means he is now also eligible for selection on the All Blacks' season-ending tour to the United States and Europe.
