Lima Sopoaga will play National Provincial Championship rugby for Southland Stags for three more seasons.

Rugby Southland general manager Andrew Moreton confirmed the Highlanders and All Blacks fly-half had signed a deal with the union until the end of 2018.

The announcement comes one month after Sopoaga, 24, extended his stay with New Zealand Rugby and the Highlanders for the same period.

Sopoaga enjoyed a breakthrough 2015 season, helping to steer the Highlanders to their maiden Super Rugby title and standing out in a victorious Test debut against South Africa in Johannesburg.

Sopoaga missed selection in the All Blacks' Rugby World Cup squad but hopes to press his claims further in 2016 with Dan Carter and Colin Slade having moved overseas.
