Wallabies skipper David Pocock has been ruled out for three months after undergoing surgery in Sydney on Tuesday.

The star openside was operated on after he damaged the articular cartilage in his right knee during Australia's loss to New Zealand last Saturday. The skipper completed the whole of the match but looks certain to miss the rest of the Rugby Championship and is also a doubt for the autumn Tests.

Michael Hooper is the favourite to step in for Pocock but Liam Gill could also be an option. Coach Robbie Deans has confirmed that scrum-half Will Genia will take the captaincy for Saturday's game and is likely to hold onto it for the rest of the tournament.

In further woe for the Wallabies, prop Sekope Kepu will also miss Saturday's match with the Kiwis. He broke down in training on Tuesday and has suffered a grade two strain to the medial ligaments of his right knee. James Slipper and Ben Alexander look to be the two options for Deans to replace the tight-head.
