The British & Irish Lions have added to their options in the backs with Ireland's Simon Zebo handed a call up to the squad.

Zebo played against the US Eagles on Saturday night but with the Lions monitoring Tommy Bowe's hand injury and fullback Rob Kearney yet to play on this tour, they have opted to draft in the Munster flyer.

Bowe underwent surgery earlier on Sunday on his broken hand and Lions coach Warren Gatland is hopeful he may yet play a role later in the tour. "We just want to see how the operation goes," Gatland said. "The surgeon who spoke to him said that if everything goes all right it could be just a couple of weeks. Once the plate is put in, the bones are fixed, basically."

But with Bowe sidelined for a couple of weeks at least, Zebo now has the opportunity to show the Lions coaching staff his Test credentials. He admitted he was upset to miss out on selection in the original 37-man squad but Zebo, who won his sixth cap for Ireland in America, is looking to seize the opportunity.

"I heard this morning that Tommy had an injury on one of the social media sites so I just had to stay focused and keep myself away from it, just try and go out and play well tonight. We got the win which was very important to us," Zebo said late on Saturday night. "I'm absolutely over the moon. It is the best news I could ever have dreamed of.

"As a professional (Irish) rugby player the ultimate goal is to be a British and Irish Lion. Hopefully I'll get the chance to do that if I get my cap. That is something I have to work towards now."
