The British & Irish Lions' have suffered a fresh injury setback with the news that lock Paul O'Connell suffered a broken arm in the first Test victory over Australia on Saturday.

O'Connell's injury is just the latest blow to the Lions' hopes of a series victory over the Wallabies with a suspension and the demands of a brutal tour having already demanded an unprecedented number of replacements. Coach Warren Gatland has already made nine additions to his original squad selection with more likely following the loss of O'Connell.

Our own historian John Griffiths reports that the previous record number of replacements used on a tour was eight during the 1980 tour of South Africa when Andy Irvine, Paul Dodge, John Robbie, Steve Smith, Tony Ward, Phil Orr, Ian Stephens and Gareth Williams were all drafted in.

The previous record for an Australian tour was seven with Scott Gibbs, Tyrone Howe, Andy Nicol, Gordon Bulloch, Martin Corry, David Wallace and Dorian West all added to the original squad selection in 2001.

Paul O'Connell (Ireland, lock) - broken arm

Currently injured:
