Israel Folau is set to undergo surgery that will rule him out of rugby for a minimum of four months, the Seven Network has reported.

The Wallabies full-back will have surgery on Tuesday on his troublesome left ankle, having carried the injury and played in pain through much of Australia's Rugby World Cup campaign, Seven reports.

Folau will have to pull out of a lucrative stint in Japanese rugby with Top League club NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes, having signed a flexible contract with the Australian Rugby Union, and, Seven reports, he faces a battle to be fit to play for the Waratahs at the start of the 2016 Super Rugby season.
