Chris Ashton is hopeful new England coach Eddie Jones will pick players on form as he bids to win a recall for the Six Nations.

Despite an enviable Test record of 19 tries in 39 matches, Ashton was one of the first players to be culled from Stuart Lancaster's Rugby World Cup training squad.

The 28-year-old formed a formidable club partnership with David Strettle, until the latter left Saracens for Clermont this season, but concerns over his defence saw him lose his international place.

However, with former Australia and Japan coach Jones replacing Lancaster in the wake of England's disappointing World Cup campaign, Ashton is keen to take advantage of a clean slate.

"It is a fresh start but I have learned over the years that all you can do is play your best and not worry too much about it. You are either in or you are out," he told the Evening Standard.

"No one knows what Eddie's plan is going to be but I am sure he will pick the best players. In recent seasons you could probably put a question mark over that being the case with England. Stretts was playing unbelievably well and not getting a look in.

"England said that players would be picked on form -- and maybe in some positions that wasn't the case -- but you get that with coaches. It's just part of rugby and you cannot please everyone. I can handle this kind of thing much better. I was a bit immature when it was all new. It does hurt but now I understand it better."

Ashton faces some stiff competition for a place on England's right wing, with Marland Yarde one of several candidates available to Jones.

"I was really happy at how things went with England in New Zealand (in 2014) and happy to be in the training squad," he said.

"It didn't work out for me but I know that when I am playing my best then I give myself a really good chance of getting back in the England squad. I want to put my name back in the selection hat."
