Brumbies star Christian Leali'ifano has spurned overseas offers to re-sign with the Super Rugby outfit for a further two seasons.

Leali'ifano's retention through to the end of 2018 is a major boost for the two-time champions who will wave goodbye to Matt Toomua and skipper Stephen Moore at the end of the season.

Leali'ifano has been a mainstay in the Brumbies' midfield since making his debut way back in 2008 and last year brought up 100 appearances. The two-year extension will ensure he has the opportunity to restart his Test career which has been stuck on 16 caps since the end of 2014.

The flexible contract will also afford him the opportunity to play in Japan over the 2016/17 and 2017/18 Top League seasons.

"The Brumbies have shown a lot of faith in me over the last nine years and I'm pleased we have been able to sort everything out so I can stay," Leali'ifano said via a Brumbies media release.

"By 2018 I will have been in Canberra for 12 years, so this is very much home for me. Working with Stephen Larkham I feel like my game has improved, so to have two more years to work this coaching staff and the rest of the playing group is very exciting.

"This year we have a great team and I'm really looking forward to 2016 being a memorable year for the club, starting with our trial matches and round one hit-out against the Hurricanes."

With Moore returning to Queensland Reds and Toomua heading overseas, Leali'ifano will be among the candidates to captain the Brumbies next year.

In what could be a nod to the future, coach Stephen Larkham hailed Leali'ifano's leadership qualities as the playmaker prepares to enter his ninth season of Super Rugby.

"Christian is a leader for this playing group on and off the field," Larkham said.

"He will go down as one of finest players to have ever represented the Brumbies for many reasons, and we are very happy that he has agreed to stay until at least 2018."
