Laser beam aimed at Springbok kicker
July 24, 2000

The New Zealand Rugby Union is investigating allegations that a laser beam was aimed at the eyes of Springbok goalkicker Bram van Straaten during Saturday's Tri-Nations clash in Christchurch.

Television replays showed footage of a red beam on van Straaten as he lined up a penalty kick, while the player himself also noticed it.

The Springboks lost the game 25-12, but are yet to lodge a complaint.

"I did notice it in my eye on that kick I missed from near the left touchline," Van Straaten said in the Dominion newspaper.
