Profile

A former Lion and England international, centre Ollie Smith joined Harlequins after a spell in France ahead of the 2010-11 season.

A native of Leicester, Smith began his senior career with the Tigers, who he had supported from a young age while attending John Cleveland College. While a promising young player, he completed a PE & Sports Science degree at Loughborough University as well as playing in the Leicester Academy.

He was an unused substitute aged 17, before he made his debut a year later at the age of 18 and at the time he was the youngest player to have played Premiership rugby. An England U-19 and U-21 international, Smith was soon catching the eye of the senior selectors.

He made his debut as a replacement against Italy in 2003 in a 40-5 victory but although he featured in World Cup warm up matches against Wales and France in August of that year, he failed to make the final cut for Clive Woodward's winning squad.

He made it back into the international set up for the 2005 Six Nations and played against Italy and Scotland. Smith's form saw him selected for the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand ahead of Olly Barkley and Jamie Noon who were above him in the England pecking order. Smith was capped in the Lions' build up game against Argentina in the Millenium Stadium, scoring a try.

Although he featured in four more games, again scoring against Manawatu, he failed to make the grade for the Test series. The cap against Argentina preceded a period in international exile.

After a disappointing 2005-6 season, Smith flirted with rugby league, training with the Brisbane Broncos, before returning to star for Leicester the following season. The lure of playing in France proved too much for the local boy and he left his hometown club for Montpellier where he spent three seasons before returning to England with Harlequins.

Smith has represented the Barbarians in their 2008 match against Australia, while he has been involved with the England Saxons at a number of Churchill Cups.
