Profile

Bassett was capped 15 times by Wales between 1929-32 and led his country on nine ocasions. He also toured Australia and New Zealand with the British Isles side in 1930 and won a further five Test caps.

His made his international bow against England at Twickenham while he captained the team for the first time against Ireland in 1930 when, it was reported, that the Triple Crown-chasing Irish might have won but for the brilliance of Bassett who rose to the occasion, reportedly making three try-saving tackles, including one spectacular felling of Eugene Davy with the line apparently at his mercy.

Bassett, who played club rugby for Penarth, missed the final game of that year's Five Nations as he was en route to the southern hemisphere with the Lions. He featured in all four games during the 3-1 series loss to the All Blacks and the final Test loss to the Wallabies.

In 1931, he led Wales to their first Championship success since 1922 but his international career ended the following year after his side failed to live up to expectation and secure the final leg of the Triple Crown against the Irish having accounted for both England and Scotland.
