  • England prop Andrew Sheridan has been ruled out of their November Tests after sustaining a shoulder injury in Sale's Heineken Cup victory over Cardiff Blues on Friday. Sheridan will undergo surgery to complete a full reconstruction of his left shoulder and faces four months on the sidelines.

He joins centre Riki Flutey, fullback Delon Armitage, flanker Tom Rees and fly-half Danny Cipriani on England's growing injury list. Martin Johnson's men kick off their campaign with the visit of the Wallabies to Twickenham on November 7.

"He's a great presence around our team and he will be missed," said Sale director of rugby Kingsley Jones. It's bad news for Andrew, England and Sale Sharks and we just have to come to terms with it."

  • France coach Marc Lievremont has officially handed the captaincy to flanker Thierry Dusautoir ahead of their November Tests, with the Toulouse man taking over from lock Lionel Nallet.

France will play Tests against South Africa, Samoa and New Zealand in November and Dusautoir has been handed the extra responsibility after handling himself well on France's summer tour to face the All Blacks and Wallabies.

"We are in a crucial period at the moment with a squad that is well established, which is competitive, and which is gradually building up for the World Cup of 2011," Lievremont told AFP. "Thierry has the experience now to fully take on the responsibilities of the captaincy."

  • British & Irish Lions prop Adam Jones has resolved his future plans and signed a new three-year deal with the Ospreys.

Jones is currently out injured with the dislocated shoulder he sustained in the Lions' second Test defeat to the Springboks and is pleased with the faith shown in him by the region.

"It's nice to sign a contract while I'm still out injured, it means that I can just focus on the next two months and being back playing just before Christmas without this hanging over me," he said. "The Ospreys could have said to me that they wanted to see how my shoulder mended before committing to a contract so it's great to see that they've got the faith in me and I want to reward that faith.

"I've been around for a while now, first at Neath, and then with the Ospreys since the start, but there's still a lot that I want to achieve here. There's a lot more to come from me and from the Ospreys, which is why it's pleasing to have at least another three years."

  • Northampton prop Brian Mujati has been cited for allegedly pushing referee Nigel Owens in the back during his side's Heineken Cup loss to Perpignan at the Stade Aime Giral on Friday. His team-mate, lock Juandre Kruger, has also been cited, for stamping on scrum-half Nicolas Durand in the same game.

  • Newport-Gwent Dragons coach Colin Charvis has been banned from driving for two years and fined £900 after being found guilty of drink-driving. Charvis was pulled over by police on October 4. A breath test found he had 87 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 35.

  • The Currie Cup final, between the Blue Bulls and Free State Cheetahs at Loftus Versfeld on October 31, is fast approaching a sell-out.

  • Tasman lock Joe Wheeler will appear before a New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) judicial hearing in Wellington on Wednesday. Wheeler has been cited for allegedly stamping on Otago flanker Alando Soakai's head in their Air New Zealand Cup match at Carisbrook on Saturday. He will appear before NZRU judicial officer Peter Hobbs in Wellington on Wednesday.

  • Callum Bruce has taken over the captaincy of Waikato for the remainder of the Air New Zealand Cup after regular skipper Liam Messam was called in to the All Blacks squad for their end of year tour.

  • Retired Wanaka lawyer Ross Laidlaw will replace Stuart McLauchlan as chairman of the Highlanders Super 14 rugby franchise. Laidlaw, 59, has been a director of the Otago Rugby Football Union for the past two years, but has now resigned from that position.
