Lewis Moody has experienced a stunning career - ESPNscrum looks back at some key moments.

1978: Born June 12 in Ascot, Berkshire.

1996: After coming through the ranks at Leicester Tigers, makes his senior debut against Boroughmuir while still attending Oakham School.

1997: A member of the England Colts side that won the Madrid Sevens.

1999: Wins the first of seven Premiership titles.

2000: Retains Premiership title with Leicester.

2001: Wins the first of two Heineken Cups with the Tigers, before going on to make his senior England debut against Canada on June 2.

2003: March - Part of England's Grand Slam-winning Six Nations squad.

October/November - Plays in all seven matches as England win the World Cup, including winning the lineout that led to Jonny Wilkinson kicking the winning drop goal in the final against Australia. Is awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours.

2005: Wins three caps for the British & Irish Lions on their tour of New Zealand.

2007: After missing the Six Nations through injury, Moody wins 50th international cap in England's World Cup quarter-final win over Australia. Features in all seven matches for England at World Cup, including the defeat to South Africa in the final.

2008: Ruptures an Achilles tendon in the first match of the Six Nations against Wales. Misses a total of nine months after also undergoing ankle and hip surgery.

2009: Breaks his ankle prior to Six Nations but returns in time for the November internationals.

2010: Captains England for the first time in a Six Nations clash with France. Leaves Leicester after 14 seasons and over 200 appearances. Signs a three-year deal with Bath.

2011: January - A knee injury rules Moody out of the Six Nations.

October - Becomes only 16th player to make over 70 appearances for England in a World Cup victory over Scotland, but England's tournament is dogged by controversy and they ultimately crash out in the last eight against France.

October 23 - Announces retirement from international rugby after 71 caps and nine tries for his country.

December 7 - Expected to be out of action for 10 to 12 weeks after undergoing shoulder surgery. The injury was sustained during Bath's 16-7 Aviva Premiership defeat to Worcester on November 25 - only Moody's third appearance for Bath since returning from the World Cup.

2012: March 6 - Announces retirement from all rugby with immediate effect.
