Newport Gwent Dragons chief executive Gareth Davies is seeking a seat on the board of the Welsh Rugby Union.

Davies is among five people, including WRU chairman David Pickering, vying for the two national director places available. Former Wales prop Anthony Buchanan, Newton's Dai Davies and Cefneithin's Dennis Jones are the other candidates.

Davies has been a key member of the Regional Rugby Wales board that is currently locked in a dispute with the WRU over a new Participation Agreement and, with Pickering's current three-year term coming to a close, the former fly-half intends to make a difference should he be elected. However, he denied his decision to stand was one of protest.

He said: "It is time for fairer representation and hence that's why I'm standing.

"I would make the point that I'm very much standing as an individual, as a rugby fan, not as somebody actually involved in the professional end of the game.

"I obviously have that experience and knowledge now, but very much first and foremost as a rugby man who cares about the game and hopefully somebody who can make a difference."

There are four positions up for election on the WRU board - two national director places and two district director places. The second national spot was made available after Gerald Davies, the former Wales and British & Irish Lions wing, recently resigned from his post.

In July, Cardiff Blues chairman Peter Thomas also backed Gareth Davies to replace outgoing Gerald Davies on the WRU board.
