Bristol confirmed tonight that England hooker Mark Regan had been ``sanctioned`` for breach of contract after he played for the Barbarians.

Regan defied orders from his club and Premier Rugby to captain the invitational side to victory over world champions South Africa at Twickenham on Saturday.

Bristol would not officially confirm the nature of the sanction, but coach Richard Hill had previously indicated Regan faced a fine.

Chief executive David White said: ``We have had a meeting with Mark today and, as a result, he has been sanctioned in accordance with a breach of the disciplinary conditions of his contract.

``We now consider the matter closed and will not be making any further comment.''
