Linford Christie, one of Britain's greatest sprinters, finally came good after a string of near misses on the world and Olympic stage. The return of the shamed Ben Johnson commanded headlines, but he was overshadowed by Christie who powered to gold in a time of 9.96s.
Sally Gunnell took gold in the 400m hurdles, Steve Redgrave's coxless pairs partnership with Matthew Pinsent brought him gold for the third straight Olympics, while Chris Boardman wowed the crowd on his revolutionary bike in the velodrome - taking gold in the pursuit.
But the Barcelona Games really was all about the US Dream Team. For the first time, professionals were allowed to compete and they did not disappoint - wheeling out the likes of Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. They swept all before them, averaging 117 points in their eight matches on their way to gold.
