Millar confirms availability for GB road race team

Cyclist David Millar has made himself available for London 2012 selection after a legal decision made him eligible for this summer's Games.

Millar, along with sprinter Dwain Chambers, was one of the high-profile British athletes to be handed a reprieve by the Court of Arbitration for Sport last month, after it decided that the British Olympic Association's stance of lifetime Olympic bans for convicted drugs cheats was incompatible with the World Anti-Doping Agency's stance on the matter.

Potentially a useful member of the Team GB road race squad that will hope to lead Mark Cavendish to a gold medal this summer, Millar has formally made himself available for selection for the team - although he will step aside if his presence threatens to bring negative attention to the squad.

"I'm available," Millar said, according to the Times. "I spent a lot of time thinking about it, but I've concluded that if I can be of benefit to the team, I would be happy to help."

He added: "The most rational thing would be to leave it to the selectors to decide. If they think that including me might be in any way detrimental - even if, physically, I could be one of the strongest riders - I will respect any decision they make.

"But I think I can genuinely help in the road race, and that's helping Mark."

Cavendish is one of Team GB's favourites for gold this summer, after he claimed the rainbow jersey with victory at last year's Road Race World Championship in Denmark.
