Chambers selected for London 2012

Sprinter Dwain Chambers has been selected to represent Great Britain at London 2012, less than three months after his lifetime Olympic ban was overturned.

Chambers, 34, will run in the 100 metres and 4x100m relay at the Games after the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the British Olympic Association's policy of lifetime bans for drug cheats. He was given a two-year athletics ban after testing positive for the drug THG in 2003.

He won the Olympic trials last month but was unable to run the Olympic 'A' standard, with his time of 10.25 seconds 0.07s outside that mark.

He said: "To be given the opportunity to [run] in my home town has been a dream that at times has seemed very distant and is now a reality. I thank the selectors for the confidence and faith they have placed in me."

Jenny Meadows, the World Championships bronze medallist at 800m, has not been selected. She has been unable to race competitively so far this year due to injury, but said last week she will appeal any snub.

Lynsey Sharp is the only 800m runner named, having snatched silver in the European Championships in Helsinki last week, following victory at the Olympic trials. She has not achieved the 'A' standard, but has been chosen ahead of four athletes - Meadows, Marilyn Okoro, Jenna Simpson and Emma Jackson - who have reached that landmark within the qualification period.

Charles van Commenee, the UK Athletics head coach, said: "It was a selection meeting that took six hours, and two hours of those six were spent on the 800m women.

"There were five women in contention, four of them had multiple 'A' standards, while Sharp had a few 'B' standards. The panel had to decide whether it would go with one athlete who had 'B' standards - or one, two or three who had 'A' standards. Once you have selected someone with 'B' standards, you can't fill it up: those are international regulations.

"Most important is having the right performance at the right time. Lots of people had the right performance at the wrong time. Sharp has done very good business recently, and performed at the trials, beat everybody, and did very well at the Euros.

"We decided that Sharp is the one with the best current form. It was difficult because not one of these athletes actually took control of their own destiny."

Jessica Ennis has been chosen to take part in both the heptathlon, her specialist event, and the 100m hurdles, which she won at the Olympic trials.

She said: "I am really excited to have made my first Olympic team, and can't wait to compete in London on August 3 and 4 in front of a home crowd. I have been training really hard and feel in great shape and am really looking forward to competing - I know the atmosphere will be amazing."

The athletics events will take place from August 3-12 at the Olympic Stadium.
