Hoy named Team GB flag bearer

Sir Chris Hoy has been handed the honour of being the official flag bearer for Team GB at the London 2012 opening ceremony.

Hoy, who was the flag bearer at the closing ceremony in 2008 following his three gold medals in Beijing, will be competing in his fourth Olympics.

A four-time Olympic gold medalist, Hoy will lead the largest British Olympic team in history (542 athletes) after members of Team GB voted for the Scot to carry the flag. He will not compete in the individual sprint but will defend his keirin and team sprint titles in London.

Hoy said: "I'm absolutely delighted and honoured to have been voted as the flag bearer for Team GB. To lead out your team at a home Olympics is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity and one that that I can't wait to experience in just a few days' time."

Andy Hunt, Team GB Chef de Mission said: "Team GB could not have placed the flag in better hands. It is a great honour for Sir Chris and the team will be proud to march behind him. He is a fantastic ambassador for his sport and his country."

The news comes less than 24 hours after Hoy's British Cycling team-mate Bradley Wiggins made history in Paris, becoming the first British winner of the Tour de France.

Hoy follows in the footsteps of the likes of Sir Steve Redgrave (1992 and 1996), Sir Matthew Pinsent (2000) and Mark Foster (2008) to carry the Union Jack at the Olympic opening ceremony.
